Analysing a list of surnames: counting & checking against a list

    Hello Everyone,

I am trying to analyze a list of last names. I would like to know how to set up a formula using 2 separate lists. The 1st list is the list of the total people by last name that have shown up to an event. The 2nd list is a list of Common Spanish Surnames. I want to know how many spanish surnames are contained on the 1st list. OF course the original list is much longer. Below is just a small sample. Please help
    List 1. List 2-Spanish Surnames
    A E
    1. BARNETT 1. ABAD
    2. BIELAMOWICZ 2. ABADIA
    3. GIEGER 3. ABADIANO
    4. GOLDEN 4. ABADIAS
    5. LEISSNER 5. ABADILLA

    7. SAUNDERS 7. ABAIGAR
    8. WEST HINSON 8. ABAJO

    Administrative Note:

    Welcome to the forum.

We would very much like to help you with your query, however the thread title does not really convey what your request is about. Tell us what you are trying to do, not how you think it should be done.

Please take a moment to amend your thread title. Make sure that the title properly explains your request. Your title should be explicit and not be generic (this includes function names used without an indication of what you are trying to achieve).

Please see Forum Rule #1 about proper thread titles and adjust accordingly. To edit the thread title, open the original post to edit and then click on Go Advanced (bottom right) to access the area where you can edit your title.

(Note: this change is not optional. As you are new, I have done it for you this time.)

make a table of all your names and with 2 pivottables, you get the wanted data.
Refresh when you add new names

with List1 in column A and List2 in column B starting in row 2

    try

    in C2

    =COUNTIF($A:$A,$B2)

I have over 13000 names. Excel just keeps thinking when turning into table. No response.

Post a small Excel sheet (not a picture) showing realistic & representative sample data WITHOUT confidential information (10-20 rows, not thousands...) and some manually calculated results. Just before posting, scroll down to GO ADVANCED, click, and then scroll down to MANAGE ATTACHMENTS and click again. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.
