Post Highlight strings longer than 16 characters

Hello! I am quite new to Excel and am looking for the most straightforward way to solve highlighting red a string if it's longer than 16 characters.

I've tried going into Format > Conditional Formatting > Rule: Formula LEN(A2) > 16, format Red, but it's... not working? I'm not really sure what to do from there. I'm not sure if the issue is my syntax or if I'm not applying this format correctly. I've tested it with a string longer than 16 characters and it did not highlight red. I'd eventually like to apply this formula to an entire column.

    Thanks so much!

I think you're on the right track, not sure why it didn't work for you. You may have an issue with a conflict between your formula and the "Applies To" range for that rule.

If you want to apply it to an entire column, such as A, first select the entire column, then add the following rule:

    =LEN(A1)>16

    Format red

    That should do it.

If that still doesn't help please attach a sample file.
