Question Conditional formatting depending on one merged cell

    Hello everybody,

I am using Excel to make a new planning tool for work, and am having some issues with conditional formatting.

For each employee and each day, the first row is for the working hours, the second one is the place, and the third one is the task (picture 1). I would like that all cells change colors depending on the place. For example, Place 1 would have the color green, Place2 would have the color orange etc... (picture 2)

I would normally know how to do basic conditional formatting but the fact that the referenced cell is merged makes it confusing. Is there a way of doing that without VBA ?

    Thanks!

Re: Conditional formatting depending on one merged cell

First, merged cells are almost always a bad idea, and we discourage them. You are not having issues with conditional formatting, you are having issues with merged cells.

The place, even though it occupies merged cells, is considered to be a value in the upper-left cell of the merged cells. That is, "Place 1" covers F8:H8 but Excel considers the value to be in F8. Each of the five cells you want to format has a different position relative to F8, so you need 5 rules for each place. I have done Place 1 for you as an example. You can do the first block F7:H9 and then use the format painter to copy the rules to all other cells.
