Storing max value of a changing cell

I want to store the max value a certain cell has ever had - which btw is a value that changes based on conditions.

I.e. something like this: cell A1: =B1 if B1>A1 else keep A1

Is this possible?

Not without VBA.

VBA can do it, if you would prefer VBA. I don't readily have a VBA based example.
