Average sales per year - Averageif?

i am trying to find a formula that will display the average sales per year.

My data contains:

COLUMN A = DATE
COLUMN B = AMOUNT

I have tried: =AVERAGEIF(A2:A17, "2001", B2:B17)

I made a column C with the year

After that.

E2 =Averageif($C$2:$C$18,E$2,$B$2:$B$18) and drag to the right.


I also made a pivot table, with the same data.
