    Formatting Rules- need assistance

When creating a new formatting rule, what do I need to correct within the format values for all rows with the word "Promo" in column J to turn into red text? Currently, only the 3rd row turns to red text with the first formula. Nothing turns red with the 3 formulas under that.

    =$J3="Promo"

    I've also tried

    =$J:$J="Promo"
    =J:J="Promo"
    =$J:J="Promo"

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Is o.k.: =$J3="Promo"

However, make sure the "applies to" range is =$J:J or better, some smaller range e.g.: =$J1:J100

    Re: Formatting Rules- need assistance

Thank you for your response. It's currently has an apply to formula of =$3:$3 but won't allow me to eliminate the absolutes. When I choose =$J:J it only formats the J column and not the entire row.
Any suggestions to get each row to format when one cell has the item I'm after?

    Re: Formatting Rules- need assistance

As Ben has explained, you simply need to apply the absolute in front of the column reference.

    Conditional Formatting
    • Highlight applicable range >> =$J3:J100
    • Home Tab >> Styles >> Conditional Formatting >> New Rule
    • Select a Rule Type: Use a formula to determine which cells to format
    • Edit the Rule Description: Format values where this formula is true: =$J3="Promo"
    • Format… [Number, Font, Border, Fill]
    • OK >> OK

If you are starting from row 3, make sure you highlight the cells beginning with J3 and then down. This makes J3 the anchor cell for conditional formatting.

If this does not help, the maybe you should attach a sample file with what you have and what you expect!

Thank you, Jeff. That only formatted the column and not the row. I'd like each row to turn into red text if it has the word "promo" in column J.

I would love to share a screenshot, but I'm not seeing where I can upload that into this thread.

I got it! The applicable range threw me off since I wanted the entire sheet to follow the rule. Had to tweak a few things within the formulas and apply to boxes, but it finally works! Thank you so much for your help on this

    Re: Formatting Rules- need assistance

Glad you got it. If you want the whole row then change the applicable range.

    Example: $A$3:$N$100
