my excel workbook has been working fine but now it has a problem: When i select data in any cell that row's row number disappears - also the formula bar only shows top half of data (unreadable). Also, if i enter text in a row it does not appear at all. I've checked several other workbooks and the same problem exists.

Any changes to your set-up? Still using Excel 2016? Generally speaking, things don't just change spontaneously, so any context you can think of will help.
I am NOT going to enable macros, but with them disabled I can see no problem such as you describe.

I have somehow fixed the problem - I found a tab on the lower left of the sheet which read "Accessibility: Investigate" then a panel on right of screen opened - I closed it and it seemed to fix the issue.
I will close this post now.
