Excel formula to count number of unique active users each month

I have a large sheet of data, each row contains a variety of data, but includes a start date and a leaving date.

I want to be able to produce some stats which will dynamically count for each month how many unique active users there are. This is for students that are part of a school so the goal is to be able to see how many unique students were active at any given point.

There is no 2020 version of Excel - do you have Excel 2019, Excel 2021 or MS365? Pleae update your profile accordingly.

Please add expected results, manually calculated, to your workbook.

You are using the UNIQUE function, so you probably have MS365 or EXCEL 2021.

To calculate the number of unique active students on the first day of the month please try:

The attached sheet also contains formulas for calculating the number of unique active students on the last day of the month and a formula for at least 1 day in the month.
