Post Vlookup values that occur only in the most recent date

    Hi all,

I have a file that has two tables. I'm renaming the names of my columns and tables for clarity, but not changing any of the rest of my formula. Table 1 has HR related document numbers, and Table 2 has staff onboard by period. I'm attempting to lookup the HR documents in Table 1 by only the most recent date in Table 2 to determine what is vacant as of the most recent pay period. Can you help with where I'm breaking the formula?

    =MAX((TABLE_2[DATE COLUMN]),IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A3,TABLE_2[#All],57,0)),"VACANT",VLOOKUP(A3,TABLE_2[#All],57,0)))

Fast answers need visual help. Please read the yellow banner at the top of this page on how to attach a file and a mocked up solution.

I would post a workbook, but unfortunately it's mostly confidential information and would take tons of time to scrub.

You should not and do not need to post the real data - we need a representative sample.

A good sample workbook has just 10-20 rows of representative data that has been desensitised. It also has expected results mocked up, worked examples where required, relevant cells highlighted and a few explanatory notes.
