Drop-down menu expands photo but resolution does not improve.

In the attached spreadsheet I have a pull-down menu in cell E5. It displays a blown up version of the relevant photos contained in the range C2:D3.

Unfortunately the displayed images in cells F5 and G5 are of poor quality. I want the quality to improve so that it displays with the same quality as shown in cells F8 and G8.

All the data for larger images exists in cells C2:D3. If I expand any of the pictures in those cells, the picture quality improves dramatically.

I realise I could simply make the images in cells C2:D3 larger (also expanding those cell sizes accordingly), but then the spreadsheet would become very large and much harder to navigate. Any suggestions?

When I open this file I see no discernable difference between the images in row 5 and in row 8. It does not look like the screen shot you posted here. BTW your aspect ratio is off in row 5.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for replying! The image you post, is exactly how I would like it to appear on my Mac (in Row 5). However i downloaded the file again (just to make sure I had not made a mistake in the upload), and the image in row 5 is exactly as per my original photo in the first post (i.e. very blurry and out of focus due to low pixel count). I am wondering if we are using different versions of Excel (I am using Microsoft Excel for Mac version 16.68 on a Microsoft 365 subscription), or if you are using a PC compared to my Mac, or if there is something I need to adjust in my settings. If the latter, I can't figure out what.

I'm sorry, but I also lost you on the aspect ratio being off. Do you mean that my size doesn't fit exactly in the cell?

Thanks for your reply. At least I now know that it must be possible to get the result I want, but I still don't know how.

Re: Drop-down menu expands photo but resolution does not improve.

The problem may have to do with how images are rendered on a Mac. I don't have a Mac for testing so I can't help much more.

The dimensions on the original photos up top are almost perfectly square, but in the lower versions the dimensions are a little wider than they are tall. This makes them look a little squashed. If you fix that so the ratio of height-to-width is the same in the originals at the top as it is in the selections on rows 5 and 8 it may tune up how the images are rendered. Just a wild guess. Right click on a photo then select Format Picture and look at the dimensions in the upper right corner of the Ribbon (hopefully it's the same on a Mac).

    Hi Jeff,

    Thanks for your latest reply.

I have now managed to test the file on a PC (actually Microsoft Windows running on my Mac under Parallels), and found that the photos in row 5 render perfectly. So the problem is most likely something to do with the way the photos are rendering in the Mac version of Excel compared to the PC version.

Re: Drop-down menu expands photo but resolution does not improve.

Actually I was hoping to be in a position to display photos on my iPad based on the pull down menu, but I see there is another problem in getting it to work due to a message on my iPad "This version of Excel doesn't support displaying or updating pictures linked to cells". I read somewhere that an iPad supports Parallels so i will try that.
