Adding Negative numbers to Positive

Hello, I hope someone can help me with what I am guessing is a function issue. I am working on a simple spreadsheet and trying to total rows in which some numbers are negative. No matter how I write the write sum (adding or subtracting) I do not come out with the correct amount. I am guessing that it is not a "SUM" I should be using but I am unsure of the other functions. Had a quick read about SUMIFS and felt very confused and not sure if that is what I should be using... Any help appreciated.

Hello Pete, Apologies for the delay. While looking at the spreadsheet I just realised I have a bigger issue - however, for now, it is the TOTAL in row 5 that is not correct. It should be -2.22 instead of -4.44 . The formula I have there, which is obviously incorrect, is =SUM(R5:S5) . I am having a complete blank on what to do. Any advice? Thank you.

EDIT- Sorry, the formula I incorrectly have there is =SUM(H5:I5), not as I said above.

I am having trouble with the "manage attachments" option. It doesn't give me an upload button unless I host the image on a website rather than straight off the PC. I am going to try to attach it again. Let me know if it doesn't work. Thank you.sample ss 1.jpg

If you click on H5 and look at formula bar
does it show anything?

It seems your formula is =SUM(R5:S5)

I see the image, but without formulas and cell locations to see what they're doing it doesn't work for me.

Keep trying. I'm signing off today and will check in tomorrow.

(After manage attachments, at the top, upload files from your computer. . .be sure your windows are maximized
or try scrolling out. Then navigate to the file. Select, etc.)

I think your logic is wrong:Column D is included in both Income and Expnses calculations - cannot be both!

Income iA, Expense B so TOTAL= A- B

Put sales In B (=A), Expenses in C and for C sum D:H so TOTAL=B-C

I see what you mean that it can not be both. I was thinking, in my skewed logic, that it would subtract it from one (as it was a negative number) and add it to the other but now thinking I just stared at it for too long and lost the plot ...

I have used excel perhaps 5 times and am really unknowledgeable about most of it and very inexperienced so you may have to be very patient with me. I am a bit confused about what you have suggested. Would it not be ok to just use "=SUM(C)" in the J column (income total) ?

I have done what you suggested (i think) and am attaching a new sheet. Some of the TOTALS are not quite right though... For example, line 6- the negative number should bring the total down instead of increasing it.
