Filter results from a table, sort the results then pick the top

I will like to Filter results from a track and field meet by event and gender, sort the results of the filter by the mark column and if there are more than one result for an athlete return only the top result for each athlete then rank the results.

I am using filter and sort formulas and getting the results with more than one result for some athletes but would like to get onlly the fastest time for each one so that can be ranked.

How can I do that in excel.

Attached is a sample of what I have done so far.

    Punishrr,

I see that you attempted to do this with VBA, but you are now posting in the formulas/functions forum.

would you like a VBA solution, or a formulas/function solution?

Here's what I've come up with for a function/formula solution.
Final results in column Z-AJ on sheet "Rank"

Very much not an elegant solution, but it does the job.

I used the VBA code to help me extract the data from a Hytek meet manager results file. I was trying to do the filter sort and select the top result using formulas so formulas and functions will be ok for me. but vba is also ok.
