I’m totally green and trying to set up a spreadsheet.

I am handicapped and need help setting up a ‘spreadsheet’ that will allow me to record money owed to me. I need it to be able to show the amount owed, any payments, monthly interest and the resulting total. The spreadsheet needs to have the months listed and at the end of the year show totals and then go on to the next year. I am totally green and have never used excel before. I would appreciate any help with this that I can get.
Thanks for the opportunity to ask.

have you never used excel before at all
also what version of excel do you have - 2.78 does not mean much to me

    usually versions are office 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 , or if a subscription version it will be 365

how do you record things now ?

Can I send you a copy of my manual ledger and the excel spreadsheet that I am trying to set up? I don’t even know how to do that! I took screenshots of both, but how can I get them to you?

Re: I?m totally green and trying to set up a spreadsheet.

Think about what you would like this to look like if you were doing it by hand on a piece of paper. You would have a table with the top row as headings to indicate what each column represents, and then down each column you would record the amount of money as they occur. On the left hand side you might want to record a category or name of a person or organisation that owes you the money, and another column for the date of transaction. As with some bank statements, you might have a column for credits (money received) and and another one for debits (money paid out), or you could have one column for money (whether it is paid out or paid in) and a separate column to distinguish whether that amount is In or Out.

There are many ways of laying this out, so it might be better to look for (free) templates that people have already set up to do this kind of thing, and try to find one which suits your needs.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete

Re: I?m totally green and trying to set up a spreadsheet.

I have never used excel ever. I went into my iPad settings and it said and under the about excel it says:
version 2.78 (23100104), but it is in my office 365 that my son put in it. Currently, l use google keep and I manually enter the numbers after calculating them. My problem is that I am going to have to take the guy that owes me the money to court and I’m told that my ‘ledger’ might not be acceptable.
    Thanks for responding!

that tends to put a different slant to it , if there is something the courts need to see

I’m told that my ‘ledger’ might not be acceptable.
who told you and did they advise what maybe

Also it will need to be printable
Not sure about Ipad IOS excel , as you have 365 , you may just be using the web version

will this all be done on an ipad

there maybe an app already to do that and free to keep track and print out summary

as mentioned there are 1000's of templates on the web,
    look maybe at things like

    basic Home budget template
    Basic book keeping template
basic small business accounts / book keeping

    type of search ,

see if that helps find something that is close to what you visualise and doing now

    Thanks for your input.
A lawyer that I just explained my issue to told that it would be better to have it so there would be no mistakes. I was hoping to use my iPad, but if it’s not possible, I’ll use a desktop. Thanks!

There is definitely a version of Excel for iPad. I use it all the time. Doesn't have all the functionality of the Windows version but probably better than the online version. Printing might be a problem.

As @TMS says he uses the IPAD version all the time

its more of a record of past events then to demonstrate situation to a court?

Re: I?m totally green and trying to set up a spreadsheet.

There are instructions at the top of the page explaining how to attach your sample workbook (yellow banner: HOW TO ATTACH YOUR SAMPLE WORKBOOK). Screenshots are of little practical use as we cannot manipulate them.

A good sample workbook has just 10-20 rows of representative data that has been desensitised. It also has expected results mocked up, worked examples where required, relevant cells highlighted and a few explanatory notes.

There is no 2.78 version of Excel - what do you have? If Excel for iPad, please say so in your profile.

In future, please make your thread titles more detaiuled. Most people here are trying to set up a spreadsheet ...

Re: I?m totally green and trying to set up a spreadsheet.

I’m sorry, but I’m totally lost. I tried making a sample workbook and it calculated the proper interest but when I hit enter it treated it like a payment and reduced the principal amount by the interest. I wanted the interest to be added to the principal and shown as a total in the total column I’m apparently not doing it properly. I found the interest formula which was =IPMT(B2, 1 B3, B1) but that’s as far as I can go without knowing what to do.
I looked at the ‘ how to attach your sample workbook’ , but it was just too confusing for me to figure out.
I wish I was more savvy with the stuff, but I’m not.
    Thank you for responding
