Trying to Stop duplicates with Data Validation

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me with this problem. I have two spreadsheets that I am try to stop duplicate entries in the first column. I used data validation and it never catches anything unless I uncheck "Ignore Blank". It then gives the popup error, but it stops all entires not just duplicates.
