URGENT HELP! Excel bug? Two sets of identical numbers, same formulas, different results!

    Hi Excel Forum,

I'm building a financial model and have to repeat the same calculation at least twice in the same workbook.

From the same starting numbers, I'm performing what seems to be the exact same calculation, using identical values, and yet.. the outputs are different.

My best guess is that there's a miniscule difference buried way beyond the decimal places that Excel can show - but I have no idea how that could be so and no way to trust what Excel is doing in the background if that's the case.

Any ideas what the hell is going on?

It's a known problem how Microsoft Excel stores and calculates floating-point numbers.

    Hi schnide,

I think it's floating point issue. Link

As you say, although the numbers are the same it generates a very slightly different output.

    Version 1 = 240.815957606213
    Version 2 = 240.815957606214

    I hope this helps,

    Snook

Thanks both - rep added. The crazy thing is that the calculations which generated these two numbers separately should be the same as well - but maybe not, so I'll see if I can figure it out there instead :/

    Thanks again!
