This excel tip from www.exceltip.com doesn't work on W2K.
It applies the format in such a way the text as the numbers.

These cells rest with same format.

A propos: Why "A1"? It would not have to be the rage of cells selected in pass 1.

"To apply formatting only to cells containing text, use the Conditional Formatting technique:

1. Select a range of cells containing text.
2. From the Format menu, select Conditional Formatting.
3. In Condition 1, select Formula Is from the dropdown list.
4. In the Formula Box, enter the formula:
=ISTEXT(A1)
5. Click Format.
6. Select the desired format from the Format Cells dialog box, and then click OK.
