    "Save as template" option

How do you get template to reopen as an identical copy of the original
template so it can be edited and resaved as a standard spreadsheet

Save it as a template (XLT) file, and then double-click it. If you OPEN a
template, you're editing the template. Default double-click action on a
template is "new file from template". So you either have to use File-->New
or you have to double-click it to get a "copy" of the template and it'll
force you to save as a new file.

    Hope it helps!
