cell background cover

    cell background cover

What is the best way to produce a specific background color on only
some cells in a worksheet when some part of some specific text is
entered? When the worksheet is protected, even though a specific cell
is open to text, the background cannot be changed without unprotecting
it first. How would this all be managed?

    Thanks,
    Jim

It seems like Conditional Formatting is what you need to use.
Visit this website for instructions on how to automatically change a cell's
format based on another cell's value.:

    Does that help?

    Re: cell background cover

That works, thanks, but there is a little more. There are both alpha
and numeric characters entered in the cell. The numeric range is
between 0.00 thru 8. There is always a space between the letters and
numbers. Example: Apple or pear or .25 Apple or 4 pear or 7 apple.
Can I conditionally apply a specific range of numbers to apple that
will affect the background color? And if I wanted to add up just only
the numbers for the apples, could that also be done thru some special
    function?

    Thanks,

    Jim
