    Add if?

I have the following data population need:

    If column a, row 1 - x = GM then Column b (whatever row) should = 001
    If column a, row 1 - x = Claims then column b (whatever row) should = 002
    If column a, row 1 - x = Payroll then column b (whatever row) should = 003

and so on, there may be about 20 permutations. How can I create a formula which places 001 next to GM where there may be 100 assorted instances of GM in column a?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sonia
