    strange worksheet linking issue...

    Hey all,

new to the forums, and am in need of some very quick help as I've never seen this issue, and the guy that needs it is A) a **** & B) impatient.

We have I would say...thousands of excel files, each with about 10 internal sheets in each. The problem lays with the individual .xls files.

The basic way of linking internal worksheets from 1 to the other is =otherworksheet!A1 that works fine in some xls files, some it doesn't. The ones that it doesn't work in, you have to save the document first, and then it updates the linked field.

Any idea on how to fix this? I don't get any error of any kind (unfortunately). Is this an issue with protection?

    all help appreciated,
    10

    They are updated manually.

I've only been at this company for a few months, and things are terribly a mess, especially with excel and access, because non of the users actually use it correclty.

I'm only refering to 1 xls file in specific, as its the exact same issue with some of the other random files.

But I've attached a cut down version of the broken xls (because my excel file is 105k zipped ).

Change the value in J3 on the ENCAPS sheet, it should update on GELCARD sheet on field I6, but it won't, until you save it.

Oh, ignore the macro, and ignore the external link -- the macro is for printing certain sheets, the external link...well that's been there way beyond since I've been here, and it's in the template file...aka one of the past IT's screwed something up and I haven't fixed it yet.

    NM, answer found.

I don't know why, but in the 'options' of some of the users excel, there calculation options are setup to update manually, not automatically.

So my question is this: Is there a way to for all users to have a default of automatically update?

Well ... once XL is set with Calculation Automatic,
opening the worksheet will automatically update links ...

The question you have to deal with, especially with thousands of files, is a VBA routine to update regularly all files ...
But the initial step is for sure to create a worksheet which will store all the worksheet names ...
