    getting position of a word in a string

    hello friends
    can any body tell me how to get the position of a word in a string in excel.
    for eg:
    pen in pen
    i want to get the second pen's position
    or

    second p's positon

    Try:

    =FIND("#",SUBSTITUTE(A1,"pen","#",2))

    You can replace the "pen" with "p" or whatever you want to find. The 2 indicates occurrence number, so if you wanted to find a third pen, you would change the 2 to a 3.

    Another method. This will return the starting position of the second instance of "pen":

    =SEARCH("pen",A1,SEARCH("pen",A1,1)+1)
