What functions do I use?

I'm trying to figure out something real simple, I just can't think of how to do it on Excel. I need to figure out how can I sum up cells that will contain both numbers and text. Since the sum function will not allow text values, I'm lost.

So if, I have to figure out a way to find a function that will allow me to sum column A in this work sheet. Also, I wanted to make sure what the correct function is to transfer the inputted data to another work sheet? If the value is both text and numeric. I've run a search in this forum and there's so many options to choose and at this point, my eyes are starting to cross! Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
