Excel formula question

I saw one cell with the formula "=A1:A5"
What does this do?

i just tried it, and it only works in rows 1-5. if the formula is in B5 then is shows the value in A5, if its in C2 then is shows the value in A2 and so on. i cant see much use for it myself.

My feeling for this is: copying the value from the same row in column A. But I don't see too much use of it myself.
