Summation of cells with mixed numbers & text

A friend of mine is trying to do an Excel spreadsheet and summarize numbers in a column. Some of the numbers have non-numeric characters in them (i.e. 193 (A)). He wants to sum all the numbers including those with the non-numerics. Is there a simple way to do this?

No, there is not a simple way. It would require code, and the code would only be catering to your friend's bad spreadsheet design.
