    Index with external workbooks

I'm currently using the index function, indexing workbook A from workbook B, unfortunately the index doesn seem to work unless i have workbook A opened. Is there a way i can still index without having workbook A opened?

INDEX should work fine with closed workbooks, although not all functions do, e.g. SUMIF and COUNTIF. What formula(s) are you using, exactly?

    =INDEX('\\Computer\Charlie\excel macro\test\test lab.xls'!data, MATCH(C5,'\\\Computer\Charlie\excel macro\test\test lab.xls'!cycle,FALSE),2)

This is the code data and cycle are name boxes, maybe i should not use those? Thanks.

Yes, I don't think the defined name in one workbook will be recognised in the other, try using actual cell ranges
