    rank function on condition

Sorry, I couldn't think of a better name for this thread

I have a sorted list of teachers' initials in column A, and then in column D have a list of marks for a test.

I can use the rank function to rank each mark, but is there a way to get excel to rank marks within each class?

For example, say that A13:A25 have the initials "DO" and A26:A41 has "JZ", can I get the rank function to check A13:A41 for the initials "DO" and rank those students and then check A13:A41 for "JZ" and rank those students?

The list I am using is a lot longer and has (up to) 7 different teachers' initials to sort over, but if I can work it out for 2 I guess it shouldn't be too hard to modify that for more.

    Hello David,

Try this formula in E13 (or any other column) filled down to the bottom of your data. Change the row reference of 57 to the actual bottom of your data in columns A & D:
