If Question-I get a blank answer

I have the statement =IF(B2="*NEW*",2,"")

B2 = New Directory

I get a blank answer, when the answer i want is 2, however if i were to do a countif(B2,"*NEW*") i get an answer of 1.

So I am confused on how to search for just a specific part of a word or a cell, I thought you used **.

any help on how my formula should be
