    Sorting columns in excel

Can anyone help please as i have been searching for hours to do the following:.........

I have column M on a worksheet listing 9.25,8.66,8.63,8.73 and 9.63 on rows 10-14 ... in column S i have to sort the numbers from highest to lowest but number them 1-5 (1 being lowest and 5 being highest)

So column M will have the list as above but column S will have the numbers 4,2,1,3,5

Can this be done, any advise gratefully received.

    Many thanks
    Jane

    Better, thank you.

    In S10 and copy down, =RANK(M10, $M$10:$M$14, 1)

Thank you so so much, I have been working on this for many many hours, I have many of the above to do in the other order also as in.. the highest number would be number 1 and lowest 5,

and also on the list of the numbers like in the S column there would be a Zero which is NOT to be included in the high-low numbers...

Would it also be possible to explain the above =Rank to me and the info after so i may be able to fathom out other sections without being a pain on here!!

Once again, thank you so much

How to do this is clearly explained in Help for the RANK function, Jane.

    Can you provide an example?

I didn't find it very clear as it's the first time i have ever worked on excel formula's so found it a bit daunting if i'm honest.... I have (i think) fathomed out a bit of it although i couldn't find about the $ signs and what they stood for. Am i right in thinking after looking again that if i needed to change the figures in column S it wouldn't change the ranking correctly as the higher figure may be in a different cell line.

yes...If the numbers are now 9.25, 0, 8.63, 0 and 9.63 i only want to put the numbers NOT zero's in order but would still like to paste the formula into all 5 cells in case of later change.

Upon further reading, i am beginning to wonder if it is the Rank formula that i need or if my task can't be done with formula's, the sheets i have to prepare change monthly so i was looking to be able to just change the figures and the order appear 1-5 without too much messing.

Sorry if i appear dumb but as i say, this is the first time i have worked on formula's and i'm swamped with figures

    Thanks again
