Formula in same cell as source number? Possible?

I'm doing some data analysis and have some details calculated from a source cell into which i will input primary data.
Is it possible to have a formula in the same cell as the primary data?
I will be adding the number 1 to the figure in the cell and instead of doing this manually (i.e. in my head and typing a figure one higher) can XL do this for me? I am concerned about losing data by doing this manually.
Sorry if this is a little complex, the easy way to do this may just be to keep going as i have been........

Thanks for any information and please don't hesitate to ask for any more detail.

    Thanks

A formula in a cell can't refer to the cell itself; if it does, you get a circular reference error. Why not just have your formulas in a column to the right of the data?

    Thanks for reply

I have formulas set up which will calculate based on the target cell, was trying to make life easier for myself in the laborious task of data input.
    Thanks anyway
