    creating an IF formula

    Hello,

Is there a way to create an IF formula like this:

If cell A1 contains a - make the #'s in cell A2 negative
If cell A1 contains a + makd the #'s in cell A2 positive

See, I have a drop down list like this in cell A1:

    Deposit (+)
    Withdrawal (-)
    Loan Payment (+)
    Buy Cash (+)
    Sell Cash (-)

I want to write a formula that will look to see if cell A1 has a + or - in it and then reflect in cell A2 a positive or negative #. Is that possible?

    Please help.

    Thanks!

You can't write a formula AND a value in the same cell. Since we don't know what you are doing, I had to guess; so, take a look and see if the attachment is helpful...(?)

    Possible cross-posting?

Isn't this the same question as in http://www.excelforum.com//showthread.php?t=644303 ?
