Formula when I enter a number or text in cell D3 a figure is automatically entered in

I am trying to organize a worksheet so that when I enter a number or text in cell D3 a figure is automatically entered into cell G5, If a number (part number) is entered a value of the part appears in G5.
probably a simple task but I just cant get my head around formulas..

    Thanks in advance

You may try this formula in cell G5:=if(D3="","",1), you can replace 1 with what you wish it to be.

    You probably need VLOOKUP.

If you can't get your head around formulae, is Excel the place you want to be?

    Thanks JJW...

Your right Ed.. lots of places I'd rather be than in excel or on the computer for that matter..lol
I have started a new business, just trying to keep track of work done, parts fitted and their value.. Its a single person operation and keeping costs down.
    Thanks Ed..

    Hi Jeff,

Do you want to post an example of what you want to achieve and I'll see what I can do?
