formula to sum multiple returns

this is probably very simple
I have 2 columns - one with dates of which many are the same and one with values
How do I sum all the values for a specific date when there are multiple returns?

Try something like this

=SUMPRODUCT(--(A2:A48>="11/4/2008"+0)*(A2:A48<="11/4/2008"+0)*(B2:B48))

Adjust the range to suit
