    Creating a 2-dimensional array from a 1-dimensional list

    Hello!

I've been a lurker on this forum for a long while and it's always been able to provide me with lots of excel tips, and for that I am grateful! But this

time I have a question that I can't find the answer to here, or anywhere else on the web after a few hours of looking.

As a note, I'm not very experienced with Excel, probably somewhere between novice and intermediate.

What I need to create is a 2-dimensional array of data. The vertical (y-axis) are the tools, and the horizontal (x-axis) are the jobs. Where the y-axis

and the x-axis intersect, will be the quantity of tools needed for that specific job. There are almost 1500 tools, and 100 jobs.

What I have as a dataset is a 1-dimensional list, with columns for the tool, the job, and the quantity of tools required for the job. All the data is there, there is

a row for every time a tool is required for a job.

From what I've read, most of the time people go from 2-dimensional to 1-dimensional, using vlookup and match... But in my case I need to populate a

2-dimensional array from data in a 1-dimensional list.

I'm sure this is possible, but I don't know how I would go about it, and I'm not sure if my excel knowledge would allow me to figure it out even if I was

told how it could be done. Here's hoping!

Can anyone help? If you need to see the files I'm working with, send me a PM since it's proprietary work data.

    Thank you!

    Have you considered/Tried Pivot Tables?
Where there is a will there are many ways.

    Here's an example...

Using the Pivot Table Wizard, I dragged Tool to Row area, Job to Column area and Qty to Data area.

Then for Table options, I deselected Grand Total for Columns and Grand Total for Rows.

Haha, and here I was thinking this was complicated... It couldn't have been easier! all the default options clicked, pivot table did exactly what I wanted..

May seem trivial, but thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction!

    Take care..
