    Cell Data sort

I have been using Data sort for several years and have had no problem.

But today when I tried to sort the data on any column I get an error message that I have never seen before -

'This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized.'

I have not merged any cells I know of.

I tried making all cells the same size.

I still get the same error message over and over again.

Your spreadsheet has merged cells. Merged cells are a disaster and create all kinds of problems. There really is no excuse for using them now that Excel can centre across columns (Format > Cells > Alignment).

To get rid of merged cells, select the whole spreadsheet and go to Format > Cells, Alignment and click on the Merge cells box until it becomes clear and click OK.

    re: Cell Data sort

I tried this and the entire 6,000 line worksheet went blank.

How did this happen? What did I do wrong?

I have never knowingly merged any cells.

And how can I fix it?

When I use the Find and Replace Menu to find the merged cells the computer says I do not have enough memory to identify all the merged cells.

I do not even understand how a merge comes about.

Is there any program that will easily remove the merges?

    Hi rgrstvr

Can you post the workbook with about the first 10-15 lines showing, just so we can test using the spreadsheet and see exactly what you see. It would give you a better chance of achieving a satisfactory solution.

    re: Cell Data sort

    Thank you for your help.

I traced back several days into my backup files and figured out when the problem occurred. The I deleted the work that was done at that time. Then the problem disappeared. Now I am proceeding carefully, saving and backing up and checking to make sure I am not inadvertantly merging cells.

    Thanks again.
