programming and data validation

ok on worksheet 1 i have the headings Category and Category #.
on worksheet 2 i have 2 lists categorylist and category#list.

on worksheet 1 i have a field calling the categorylist and displaying its options correctly. lets just say a,b, and c.

is there a way to to make an if then statement something like this:?

if categorylist=a then Category # display category#list

so what i want is once a category on my first list is chosen it limits what you can choose on the second list.
