Retaining original formatting on cell being copied to

Is there a way that a cells formatting can be retained when copying another cells data into it ?

For instance I have a cell that has a box around it, and when I copy data from another spreadsheet, which isnt formatted, into this cell, it retains the characteristics of the copied cell. I know it is an option to format the cell being copied, but it is not always possible to do this.

    Thanks

I think you are referring to Edit -> Paste Special..

    There are numerous options:
Values: Copy values but not the format
Formats: Copy format but not the values
Looking for great solutions but hate waiting?
