Hi All,
VISTA EXCEL 2007
I've been using Excel for several years, mainly with math, but now I am trying something I've never tried before and I'm not sure Excel is configured to do this, but here goes.
I'm trying to write a music worksheet with Excel to do the following 5 things:
1) Calculate frequencies for all the piano keys and display the frequencies under each note. I have that part already done and working fine. No biggie.
2) Display every key of Western music (well just one octave is enough) in a column, vertically down the worksheet: C - C# - D - D# - E - F - F# - G - G# - A - A# - B - C.
That is no problem to do manually, as you can easily guess, but here is the part I am having trouble with.
3) I want Excel to calculate and display with text - each note name that belongs with each musical key.
For example - for the key of C MAJOR - the note names are C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C. I want Excel to use the numbers of half steps (which I will input manually) for each key - to calculate the letter name of each note (from the note names used in item (2) above - which Excel will then put into individual cells automatically - rather than me counting through the process to manually type in each note name. Many of the note names must include the designators for sharp -# ,or for flat -b, with the note name when appropriate.
For example: the number of half steps from note to note in all major keys - counting from the base note (key note) are 2-2-1-2-2-2-1. That is - in the key of C - the first note of the major scale is C and the next note is 2 half steps counting up from the base note and that note name is D. Another 2 half steps is the next note - E etc.
Of course I could enter the notes manually in the correct cells, but Excel wants me to not have to do that chore over and over.
4) I want Excel to automatically change all the note names when I manually change the KEY note name in its cell.
5) and finally, I want to be able to change the number of half steps at will so that Excel will calculate the note names for minor keys, each of which has a different number of half steps at different intervals for their scales. When that is done I can use Excel to calculate the note names for various modes (Dorian - Locrain etc.) with their appropriate half step intervals.
I am by no stretch an Excel Guru, so I researched the Internet for two or three consecutive weeks hoping to find some Excel features I could use to do this on my own, but I find nothing that works to make Excel perform the way I envision.
Thank you very much for your help,
samoht
