Extending VLOOKUP to sum all the matching values

I have had a search and only found functions that seem to return arrays, that I cant seem to make work - unless Im missing something obvious. What I am trying to do is extract data from one spreadsheet that has reference numbers matching another. A quick example is :

    Sheet 1
    10001
    10002
    10003

    Sheet 2
    10001 20
    10001 30
    10003 50

I want the formula in sheet one to have the total of ALL the matching values on sheet 2, not just the first one that VLOOKUP returns. Any hints would be gratefully received.

    Thank you

    Try SUMIF function:

In B1 of Sheet 1 write:

    =SUMIF(Sheet2!A:A, A1, Sheet2!B:B)

Also, please, for next posting your post title should accurately and concisely describe your problem, not your anticipated solution (like VLOOKUP which is unnecessary for this issue).
