customizing query

Hello,
I am using the component microsoft query from Excel to retrieve data to excel from a sql database.
I am trying to customize the query with some parameters as this link says http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...aspx?CTT=1#BM2

but the button "Parameter" is unable (gray), what does it depend on? How can I make it work?

You would need to enter a parameter into the Query from within Microsoft Query. In order to do this enter a criteria into the the criteria field that you want to run the parameter query on. In the value field, rather than entering a fixed value enter a description within square brackets i.e. [Parameter 1]. When the query is then run, a parmeter box will appear, which you enter in a value you wish to return. When the data is returned into Excel, you will then have the parameter button available. From this point on you to choose the way the parameter gets updated.
