    DMAX or something similar ??

    I have a small sample workbook -

The objective is to record where various animals on our stud farm. Defra now require us to keep a log. Up till now I've simply changed the field/paddock where each animal is. Now we're required to keep a historic log so I've created a sheet which simply records the animal's ref, the date it moved to the new location and the new location.

Sheet one shows what should be displayed ; the latest place
Sheet two has the database consisting of the name, date of move, place moved to.

How do I go about this - I think I want a simplified form of DMAX but can't work out how to do use it.

The actual system is over 15MB so I won't upload that.

For the sake of using a common formula across both columns

this is not efficient though and you might prefer to use a Pivot source from Sheet2 and configured such that:

"Name" and "moved to" are set as Row Labels
"Date" as Data Field set to SUM

once created apply a filter to "moved to" of "Top 1 sum of Date"
how viable this is for you is unknown.

Thank you - just the answer I was looking for - just needed someone to think outside the box ! Sticking with first solution as it easier to explain
