    (kind of)Decrease xml file size

Can any one help to reduce this or explain why...

My original file size is 8.2mb ( yes large ) I have been updating the sheet and all i have done was to add 4 lines of vba code, not very big ones at that. I also added a new sheet.
Saved the file and its now 17.9mb , zipped to 8.2mb

I reopend the file and removed a worksheet that was not needed and saved the file again this time its showed as 18.3mb, larger than before with less in it, i zipped this file and it resulted in cutting the file down to 3.0mb

This is a blank project with no data

Can any one explain the in consitant file sizes and is there anyway of keeping the blank project smaller...??

Re: How to decrease xml file size

You have lots of shapes hidden in your sheets?

Excel 2003 was an entire different format of file than Excel 2007. 2003 took lots more space.

    http://www.rondebruin.nl/shape.htm or http://www.rondebruin.nl/controlsobjectsworksheet.htm

I found I had them from the immediate window in vba. do a "? activesheet.shapes.count" and press enter. Go to another sheet and try again.
This will let you know if you have any of this problem.

    Re: Decrease xml file size

I saw a Mr Excel demo where he was showing how the file format had changed from 2003 (.xls) to 2007 (.xlsx). He renamed a .xlsx file to .zip. Then he was able to look inside at the different parts of the file. He said that Micorosft had now essentially zipped all 2007 files. Look at your file by renaming it .zip, open it up (as a zip file) and go down the zip folder branches. See which one of the files in the zip is huge. This should allow you se see what is big. This should give you a hint of what is growing. Of course rename it back to .xlsx when done.

This is pretty techy but is what I'd be doing if I had your problem.
