    Finding the Mathematical formula

Say i have a set of data or better yet x and y values. Can excel calculate the linear equation of the data and supply me with a formula?

    Re: Finding the Mathimatical formula

    Hi,

In short yes. You have two choices.

    1. Either plot the line on a chart, right click the series and choose to add the trendline and tick the display formula option. The equation will then be shown on the chart.

    2. Use the LINEST() function wrapped in an INDEX() function to evaluate the slope and intercept, i.e. the m and b values in the general equation y=mx + b
