    Analysis TookPak Documentation Needed

I have a desperate need for documentation that includes the algorithms used by the Excel add-in, "Analysis ToolPak."

Specifically, I need to know the routines that the Excel Analysis ToolPak is using to generate Regression statistics.

    Ideally, I would like documentation for 2003, 2007, 2010/2011, but especially 2003.

(I have to believe that documentation must exist somewhere -- people can't just generate these things without knowing how they were done, can they? In this case, a colleague may be presenting the analyses in court, where the methodology might be questioned.)

I've looked extensively online. I hope I've missed it. I do note that there are write-ups about the short-comings of the Analysis ToolPak, but they seem to be based on looking results, rather than at the underlying algorithms.

    Thank you.

    Here are a couple resources:
    XL2000 algorithms:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/213939

    XL2007 algorithms:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...010090842.aspx

    I hope that helps

    Thank you Ron.

The first link is a general bibliography for Excel 2000, rather than something that says which specific algorithms are used.
The second is a super-lite overview of ATP (Analysis ToolPak) general features.

I am hoping for documentation that gives the specific algorithms being used, or else, at minimum, a user guide that describes the individual options in the Regression feature of the ATP.

    Thank you.

Those links claim that the algorithms used are presented in the referenced bibliographies. I, too, was hoping to find the actual formulas.

    Thanks Ron.

I see that the ATP mainly uses the LinEST function, and that there is more in the MS Knowledge Base under that heading (mainly regarding discreet computational methods or "black box" results).

I have still not found a User Guide/Manual, or anything that talks about the options in the Regression feature, or what methods are used (I assume least-squares for the line-fit, but who knows? Same for the other parameters...)

    Thanks, again.

LINEST is most definitely a least-squares fit.

The absence of docs on ATPVBAEN is pretty appalling; if it's out there, it's well hidden.

I use the worksheet functions (LINEST in particular) instead.
