Count instances of a certain word in a range

How can I quickly count all the cells that contain a particular string (a word within a string of words)?

Here's one way...
With this list in A1:A6

C1: a string to locate in that range....and

This regular formula returns the count of cells that contain that standalone word

In that example, the formula returns: 3
(the 2nd, 4th, and 6th cells contain "and" as a standalone word.

Is that something you can work with?
