    IF Function & Data Validation

I'm trying to use the IF function, along with "dropdown lists" formed from the Data Validation menu.

What I'd like to show is when you use the dropdown list & choose "yes" some text will appear at the bottom of the page.

For example; "Is the borrower self employed?", if yes is chosen then the text that would appear is, "Provide copy of IRS tax returns for past 2 years", if no then it would just stay blank.

The problem I run into is the IF function doesn't recognize the "yes" choice in the drop down list, only the "No" choice. I did a test using another cell where I manually inputted the yes or no choice & set the formula to recognize that one cell & it worked fine.

Is there a conflict with trying to use the IF function along with a "drop down list" validation? for the life of me I can't figure this out.
