Would it be possible to sort a column with the accented and special characters first? I.e. words beginning with (either a capital or lowercase letter):
Àà, Ââ, Ææ, Çç, Éé, Èè, Êê, Ëë, Îî, Ïï, Ôô, ??, Ùù, Ûû, Üü, ?ÿ

Does the solution I offered in this thread Find (case and diacritics insensitive) duplicates in one column not work for this?
Just add the special characters and their substitute to the lookup list e.g. Æ = A.
If you need any more information, please feel free to ask.
However,If this takes care of your needs, please select Thread Tools from menu above and set this topic to SOLVED. It helps everybody! ....

Thank you very much for the solution for the other issue. This is slightly different in that I only want sorting with words starting with those letters, i.e. words starting with other characters should be at the bottom of the sheet, like this:
À
à
Â
â
Æ
æ
Ç
ç
É
é,
È
è
Ê
ê
ë
a
b
c
d
e
Assuming your Data is in A2 down and you need to sort according to the first character.
In B2
Drag/Fill DownPlease Login or Register to view this content.
Then sort on Column B Order:= Smallest to Largest
and
Then on Column A Order:= A to Z
Thanks!
Strange thing, when I sort on B column, all values become 2. (Tried with Excel 2003/2007/2010).
Could it be my local?
I don't see how that can be, unless all the data begins with an unaccented letter.Strange thing, when I sort on B column, all values become 2.
The formula is based on the ASCII value of each leading chatacter, local settings should not affect this.
Can you post a typical sample of your data, say a hundred or so rows?
Here is a sample file.
Hmm?
I don't get the problem you have.
When I open your file the returned values are all 2, but if I reconfirm the code the values are 1 or 2 as expected.
I reset my computer to French(France) and similarly, the language option in Excel, but no difference.
I don't know why you are getting only 2s.
Did the file in your other thread work okay?
