formula for cross referencing partial match and returning values from 2 columns

Hello, I am new here. Found this forum from a google search looking for some Excel formula help. I tried searching but could not find the right formula or at least I don't think I found what I was looking for.

pretty simple task I want to do:

I have two sheets:

sheet1
report with a verson of vendor names in A:A

sheet2
vendor names in A:A
matching vendor numbers in B:B

I want to cross reference the vendor names and return possible matches showing the vendor number in column C and the associated vendor name in Column D in sheet1

I know I will get some incorrect matches but if I can return all possible matches i can pick with vendor name and number is actually the correct match.

Moderator: if this is not the area for this question please move or let me know where to ask this.

thanks.

Hi 5thgenbliss and welcome to the forum

yup, right place for your post

If rcm's suggestion does not give you what you want, perhaps it would be easier to help you if you uploaded a sample workbook, showing what data you are working with, a few examples of what your expected outcome would be, and how you would arrive at that (remove any confidential info if necessary).

To attach a file to your post,
click advanced (next to quick post),
scroll down until you see "manage file",
click that and select "add files" (top right corner).
click "select files" find your file, click "open" click "upload" click 'done" bottom right. click "submit reply"

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Hi RCM.

thank you for your reply.

i have tried your workbook and the formulas within and it does work, but only for exact vendor name matches.
i was getting the same type of result with previous vlookup formulas.

but building from yours, can we have partial matches returned with the suggested matches. see worksheet sample.
