Narrow drop down items in a list. Ranking example.

    Hi all,

    This is my first post.

I think I have a relatively complex problem that may not be able to be solved with one function. I am trying to rank items in rows of cells and hoping the drop down list can "see" what the previous selection was, and exclude this choice from the list of the current drop down list.

For example, In column A, we could have:

    A1: Cats
    A2: Dogs
    A3: Birds
    A4: Gorilla
    A5: Shark
    A6: Tiger

Now, lets say I have a drop down list I have made through Data Validation - List - which contains options 1,2,3,4,5,6. This would be in column B, beside each animal.

The tool would allow the user to assign a ranking value to each animal through a list drop down, and not allow the user to denote the SAME rank to a different animal. So as the user selects a ranking, and it would be eliminated from the options then from each list thereafter. So, each ranking must be used once for each animal.

For example, if I rank Cat = 1, than the next animal I rank can only be 2,3,4,5,6. If I rank Dogs = 6, than the next animal I rank can only be 2,3,4,5. Etc.

Preferably, it would be great if the user could rank animals in any order they would like, hoping the list would adapt accordingly.

Any solutions, or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

this is exactly what i need! we are using a shared workbook for people to log work orders. Our director then goes in and a) approves (i've down thru locked drop down), and b) selects a priority (1-100). i need the drop down to only allow her to choose one per number... so that it can sort in the order she wants them completed by our consultant. did you get any assistance?

As you can tell, after six years and only three posts, the OP may not have gotten what they required from this post.
