Generating the next number automatically based on a previous cell value

Hi,

I've been tearing my hair out over this one! I'm trying to create a sheet to track and assign numbers to documents.

In column E I have a drop down list of file numbers to which the document belongs. What I would like to do then is have column F automatically assign the next sequential document number for the file number selected in column E. I'm not sure if I'm able to do it for each file number in the drop down list??
