Counting 7th cells under certain criteria

I have a spreadsheet that has the calender year down column D (15:380) and a letter next to each day in column E. I want to create a summary of a years events in D6 for example counting the number of Fridays that were worked so would have a reference letter of I, U, or L. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right, here's hoping this makes sense to people...
Below I have tried to copy a portion of my spreadsheet.
Column A allows the spreadsheet to be told when bank holidays appear.
Column B does not have much in it in the top summary section, but has the month in further down, this is worked out automatically from a column C reference.
Column D has the year reference in the top to enable the dates further down to be worked out, the number of weeks is worked out automatically, and it also has the reference names for what I want my summary to show.
Column E has the reference letters next to associated dates, and at the top section, in teh question marks is where I want it to work out e.g. how many Fridays joe bloggs has worked.

    Hope this helps
